WHISE receives regular requests to deliver bystander training, gender equity/equality training and prevention of family violence training including managing disclosures. A community capacity building program called Prevention of Family Violence First Aid was devised, bringing together all the training packages together in the one course.

“First Aid” was employed as a concept, as first aid aims to empower non-clinical and/or specialist skill personnel on how to intervene to support the health and wellbeing of a person and to provide support while waiting for specialist intervention. The concept of a first aider highlights that an individual can act, and make a difference, in many settings if given specific skills and knowledge.

In partnership with Cardinia Shire’s Together We Can Network, WHISE designed a pilot course that was delivered over 6 weeks to members of the community. The modules covered:

  • the prevalence of family violence in their local community and the broader context of Australia
  • the drivers of family violence in their community and the evidence around stereotypes in the community Practice
  • how to take action to stop poor behaviours that lead to family violence, and violence against women (active bystander)
  • how to respond to resistance and backlash
  • how to respectfully respond to recognise and refer disclosures of family violence and
  • how to practice self-care

The pilot of the first Prevention of Family Violence First Aid was completed. Delivered through the Together We Can partnership for the Cardinia Shire Council, the evaluation report demonstrated the value and positive impact of the program.

WHISE has now had additional requests to deliver the program from: City of Kingston Council, Cardina Aligned Leisure Recreation Centres, and Mornington and Frankston collaborative working groups.

Prevention of Family Violence First Aid Train the Trainer Program

WHISE is seeking resources to help design and develop the “white label” train the trainer program which we are also hoping can align to a national micro credential pathway. In addition to this WHISE has also had discussions with the Integrated Family Violence Partnerships of Southern Melbourne and Bayside Peninsula to partner and contribute to funding the work to develop a train the trainer product so that participants who have undertaken the first aid program, can deliver it themselves to community.
